11/08/07: P-Con V Newsletter - release 01
I had planned to have released a newsletter before now, but as I will explain later, circumstances got in the way.
We are in the process of preparing a new dedicated P-Con website at www.pcon.ie which has been generously donated to us. In the meantime there is a temporary website at here which has all the details.
The location this year is the Central Hotel in Exchequer Street in Dublin 2 (across the road from SubCity as it happens). The reason for the change in location is that while I found Wynn's to be good, I knew it could have been better. We will have the rooms overnight as well and we are looking at suitable activities for the Friday and Saturday nights. If you have any ideas of what we can do, drop me an email.
The guest of honour is C.E. Murphy, aka Catie, who is a charming and delightful lady with an impish sense of humour (as shown at MeCon last week when she was involved in a 'mutiny'). Hopefully there will be no such requirements at P-Con.
Along with Catie we have a number of other guests, some of whom are new to the circuit and some are old favourites. The guests to date include Eugene Bryne, Michael Carroll, Raven Dane, Chris Dolley, Diane Duane, George Green, Colin Harvey, Inge Heyer, John Kenny, Conor Kostick, Frank Ludlow, Oisín McGann, Juliet E McKenna, Leah Moore, Peter Morwood, Dave Murphy, Kim Newman, Bob Nielson, John Reppion, John W Sexton, Brian J Showers, and last but certainly not least Charlie Stross. And stay tuned, we may have a couple more to add to this array of stars. Over the next newsletters I will be giving profiles of the guests.
Paul Cornell says that since P-Con V is just a few after Swancon in Australia, he is not going to be feeling up for another event, even if he was back in the country by then. So, his apologies, but he'll have to decline this time, and hopes we'll have him back the year after. Of course we'll be delighted to arrange this.
C. E. Murphy is the guest of honour at Pi-Con in the USA on this weekend.
Paul Cornell is going to be the new writer on the ongoing series Excalibur. For those of you who don't follow comics, this is the monthly adventures of (basically) the British branch of the X-Men.
Chris Dolley's second novel, Shift, has just been published by Baen.
In other news, it was with sadness that I heard of the death of Dave Lally's father, and more recently the death of Peter Morwood's mother. Dave is a stalwart fan of all conventions and is widely regarded as the voice of Irish fandom across Europe. Peter is a long time friend of mine (more years than I care to remember) and along with his wife Diane is also a major supporter of the conventions. My sympathies to both.
At this web page web page there are options to join, either by downloading the postal form or on-line via PayPal. The rates at this time are 25 Euro for a full Adult membership and 10 Euro for a supporting membership. Please note that the rate will increase as the convention draws nearer, so it is in your interest to sign up early. If you have any questions on the membership rates, feel free to get in touch.
We are working on this already, and there are a number of ideas. If there is any item you'd like to see, please again feel free to contact me.
As I said I'd planned on getting a newsletter out before this, but there were circumstances. Some of you know the full situation. For those that don't, the situation is that I have been suffering from blood clots in the legs. The good news is that they found the cause. The bad news is that the cause is that I have stomach cancer. It's been caught at an early enough stage and I've started chemotherapy. So I have every confidence that I will be at P-Con V (not to mention 6, 7, 8 etc). To misquote from a movie "I will not go quietly into the night! I'm going to live on! I'm going to survive!" Lets face it - I'm way too stubborn to go that easily. It's a case of so far, so good. I'm feeling OK, just waiting for the hair loss to kick in. Mind you its not like there would be far to go.
That's all the news for now. You can expect more updates as time goes on.

On a different note, if any of you have photos and / or videos of P-Con 4, could you let me see them? And if I could suggest that you send me a copy so that we can have a gallery of the event.
Many thanks

In other news, I got an email from Paul Cornell, which I'm delighted to pass on.
Hi, you lot. You're the first people I've got in touch with to spread the word about a campaign I'm running on behalf of someone I'm trying to get nominated for the World Fantasy Awards. Her name's Deanna Hoak, and you can read my pitch here
I'd really appreciate it if you could see your way clear to circulating the above address to as many online SF and Fantasy news pages as possible (a couple of you, obviously, I've chosen because you own such sites). I'm aiming, of course, to get the attention of those with memberships to the World Fantasy Convention.
If anyone can offer me any advice as to how best to find that audience, or about other people I should bring in on this, I'd much appreciate that too. Cheers.

Thats all for now. You can look forward to getting more newsletters as things progress.
Take care all, and be well

"May you live all the days of your life"
23/05/07: P-Con V
OK, as you may have seen I've had a lot to deal with the last few weeks. However, I'm now back in full swing.
I mentioned before that I was looking at a couple of locations for P-Con V. Well I'll be dropping in to one tomorrow, and unless there are any last minute snags, I'll be making the booking, thus confirming the date and location.
Also we are working on the P-Con V website, which should be up and running soon.
And we have agreed on a charity for P-Con V as well.
Will let you know more in the next few days.
Take care all, and may you live all the days of your life.
Frank
19/05/07: P-Con V
In case you've been wondering whats been happening since the great weekend, well P-Con V is going well.
As it happens, I fell ill just after the weekend with a blood clot, and that has now landed me in hospital.
Despite that, I've been in discussions with two potential locations in Dublin, and I hope to have a decision in the next week or two.
I'll keep you all updated.
Take care
Frank
